What is a working Cat?
A working cat can be a cat that is either feral, semi-feral or simply not a house cat. These cats were likely community cats (i.e. cats who were raised outdoors and may have been fed/ cared for by community members) who now prefer to live outdoors and thrive outdoors thus making them poor candidates for our traditional adoption program. As a working cat, these cats are able to live healthy, independent lives while also “working” as a natural pest deterrent on farms and other properties. Working cats are sometimes also referred to as: barn cats, farm cats, bodega cats, ship cats, warehouse cats, or brewery cats.
How does our working cat program work?
When a new cat enters Noah’s Ark as either a stray cat or relinquished cat, the cat undergoes physical and behavioral assessments. As we handle the cat and get to know he/she, we decide which program is best for that specific cat; either our typical adoption program or our working cat program. Cats in our typical adoption program are house cats that are not intended to be outdoors. Once we have decided the best option for that cat to live a healthy and fulfilling life, we continue with all medical needs. All cats that leave Noah’s Ark through either program receive spay/neuter, a vet exam, all age-appropriate vaccines, 30-day flea/tick prevention, FeLV/FIV test, dewormers, and a microchip. Cats in our working cat program also receive an ear tip.
What are working cat adoption requirements?
You must have a building with adequate shelter and safety from the elements. Also, cats thrive companionship so you must either have other cats on your premises or be open to adopting more than one working cat.
